The Kunnamangalam Judicial First Class Magistrate Court released Shimjitha Musthafa from police custody on February 5, 2026. She is the accused in the case of abetment to the unnatural death of U. Deepak from Govindapuram. Police said she will be taken to Kannur district soon to gather more evidence related to her bus journey to Payyannur. Earlier, police checked CCTV footage from the bus showing both Deepak and Shimjitha travelling together. A senior police officer involved in the probe said, "The phone used by the suspect to capture the video of Deepak has been examined by cyber forensic experts to check suspected editing before it was shared on social media." The report is expected soon. Meanwhile, Shimjitha's bail plea at the district sessions court will be considered on Friday after being deferred earlier due to the investigation team's custody request. Deepak was found dead at his home near Govindapuram in Kozhikode on January 18. Police sources say he took his own life after the video, reportedly shot by Shimjitha on January 16 during their bus journey in Kannur district, alleging sexual harassment, was widely circulated on social media.
