Giant Phantom Jellyfish Spotted Deep Off Argentina Coast
February 5, 2026
Scientists from the Schmidt Ocean Institute have filmed a rare giant phantom jellyfish near Argentina. This deep-sea creature, Stygiomedusa gigantea, was spotted 250 meters below the South Atlantic Ocean's surface. It can grow up to 1 meter wide, with arms that stretch up to 10 meters long. Its four long pink ribbon-like arms are not stinging tentacles. Instead, the jellyfish uses these arms to catch fish and plankton for food, said the institute. Besides this amazing find, the research team discovered 28 potential new species, including corals, sea urchins, and sea anemones. This exciting deep-sea exploration reveals more about the mysterious life below the waves.
