The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has updated rules for the Civil Services Examination 2026. Candidates already serving as IAS or IFS officers from earlier exams cannot appear for CSE 2026. UPSC said this affects 23 civil service posts. The new rule states, “If such a candidate is appointed to the IAS or IFS after the Main exam 2026 starts but before results are declared, and continues in the service, they will not be considered for appointment based on CSE 2026 results.” However, candidates in IPS or Central Service Group 'A' can try again in CSE 2027 if exempted from their service training. UPSC released the notification on February 4, 2026, with full exam details, including venues, fees, and application process. The last date to apply online at https://upsconline.nic.in is February 24, 6 p.m. Attempts allowed: General and other categories get six tries. SC and ST candidates have unlimited attempts. OBC and PwBD candidates may attempt nine times. UPSC will hold the preliminary exam on May 24, 2026. About 933 vacancies are expected, including 33 for disabled persons. Exams will be across 83 cities in 28 states and 8 union territories.
