India Closely Monitors Iran Protests; No Indians Missing or Killed, Says MEA
February 5, 2026
India is keeping a close watch on the situation in Iran amid ongoing protests. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) told Parliament that no Indian nationals have been reported missing or killed during the unrest. "The government is closely monitoring the situation in Iran," said Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh. There are about 9,000-10,000 Indians living in Iran. The MEA said these nationals are not stranded since Iranian airspace is open and commercial flights are operating. The Indian Embassy in Tehran remains in regular contact with the Indian community, including students, providing guidance and support. Since June 2025, no evacuation like Operation Sindhu has taken place. Indians wishing to return home have been advised to use regular commercial flights. The government issued travel advisories on January 5 and 14, urging people to avoid non-essential travel to Iran and advising those in Iran to stay alert and leave if needed. The crackdown on protests in Iran has resulted in at least 6,876 deaths, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency. Despite this, Indian nationals remain safe, with continued embassy assistance. The MEA confirmed that the embassy continues to assist and guide Indians in Iran as necessary.
