Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced on February 5, 2026, that mobile phones will be banned in all government and private schools across the state starting March 1, 2026. This major decision came during the closing ceremony of the 69th National School Games Under-19 Girls Handball Tournament in Ghumarwin, Bilaspur district. Mr. Sukhu said, "It has been observed that mobile phone usage during lunch breaks and school hours distracts students from their studies and interpersonal growth." He emphasized the state government's commitment to offering world-class education. Strict rules will apply: any student caught with a phone will be fined ₹500, and the device will be confiscated. Parents of such students must attend mandatory counselling sessions at the school. The Education Department will create a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to deal with repeat offenders, ensuring long-term compliance. The Chief Minister, a product of the government school system himself, underscored his dedication to improving education quality. He also highlighted the state’s focus on sports development and sports tourism. Female athletes from Himachal who participated in the recent Asian Games will be offered job opportunities by the state government. To celebrate Himachal Pradesh’s gold medal win in the National Handball Championship, Mr. Sukhu announced a cash prize of ₹20 lakh for the team. He also shared plans to complete the indoor stadium in Ghumarwin and the local school building within a year. A new girls’ hostel will be built at Morsingi. The 69th National School Games saw 30 teams competing, with Himachal Pradesh defeating Rajasthan in the final and Haryana securing third place.
