18 Killed in Suspected Illegal Coal Mine Explosion in Meghalaya

At least 18 people died in an explosion at a suspected illegal coal mine in a village in East Jaintia Hills district, Meghalaya, police reported on Thursday, February 5, 2026. Authorities confirmed the recovery of 18 bodies from the site. The explosion trapped several labourers in the mine, leading to their deaths. The police are still searching for others feared trapped. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the tragedy. The PMO quoted him on X saying, “Pained by the mishap in East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest.” Rescue operations continue as the community mourns the loss.
