The long 35-year wait for 168 families in Coimbatore district to get house pattas has finally ended. Most families are Arundhathiyars. The State government gave pattas under the Kalaignar Kanavu Illam (KKI) scheme. This came after the second bench of the State SC/ST Commission, led by Vice-Chairperson and writer Imayam, took action. Thirty families from Kulayygounden Puthur approached the Commission in June 2025, asking for electricity connections. Officials said connections were not possible as these families had no pattas. The Commission then worked to get pattas for them. On January 29, 2026, pattas were issued. Mr. Imayam said, “The Commission is grateful to Chief Minister M. K. Stalin for the swift action in ensuring pattas for poor people.” The Commission also told the district administration to find other families needing pattas. The administration gave land to another 35 families from Pogalur in Annur taluk, taken from Bhoomidhana Variyam land. Some beneficiaries had lived in temporary sheds. They visited the Commission’s Chennai office to get copies of their patta orders so they could build houses. Others will get their pattas from the District Collector. Additionally, 103 families in Marudur village, Mettupalayam taluk, were allotted land. These included 67 families in rented homes, 34 on waterbody poramboke land, and two on Railway and National Highways poramboke lands. Mr. Imayam said the district administration plans to issue these pattas soon. The land was originally donated to the Bhoodan Board in 1964 by Kariyagounder. Pattas were given after cancelling those held by ineligible occupants who had encroached on this land.
