A suicide bombing at the Terlai Imambargah, a Shia place of worship in Islamabad’s Shehzad Town, killed at least 31 people and injured more than 160 during Friday prayers. The attacker struck while worshippers were gathered in large numbers. Video footage from PTI shows panic with people running and many bodies lying on the ground near the mosque. Rescue workers, police, and locals rushed to aid the wounded, who were taken to nearby hospitals. An emergency was declared at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences to handle the flood of casualties. Police called it a targeted attack and said a full investigation is ongoing. No group has claimed responsibility yet. Political leaders condemned the bombing strongly. Parliamentary affairs minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry called it a “cowardly act” and expressed sorrow for the victims. Senate opposition leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas described it as a serious security failure and said attacks on places of worship “cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.” President Asif Ali Zardari said, “Targeting innocent civilians is a crime against humanity. The nation stands with the affected families in this difficult time.” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered a thorough probe, stressing that the culprits must be caught and punished. Interior minister Mohsin Naqvi also blamed the attack and called for best medical care to the wounded. The blast comes amid rising militant violence in Pakistan, with Baloch separatists, Pakistani Taliban, and Islamic State affiliates recently active. It happened days after deadly clashes between Pakistani forces and the Balochistan Liberation Army. Islamabad tightened security after the attack. This incident occurred while Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was visiting Pakistan in the capital. Earlier, Islamabad suffered a suicide blast in November killing 12 near a court complex. Authorities continue investigations into any militant links.
