Scientists Find 207 Hidden Volcanoes Under Antarctica's Ice Sheet
February 6, 2026
Scientists have discovered 207 hidden volcanoes beneath the thick ice covering Antarctica. This new finding comes from an international study led by China’s Polar Research Institute. The team created the first complete digital catalogue of Antarctica’s subglacial volcanoes, named ANT-SGV-25, as published in the Earth-Science Reviews on February 3.
ANT-SGV-25 is the world’s first full archive of volcanoes buried under Antarctica’s ice. The project was done in partnership with the University of Exeter and other global researchers. Previously, Antarctica was thought to be geologically quiet. But this research shows it is one of Earth’s major volcanic areas.
Under kilometres of ice, these 207 volcanoes remain hidden. Some are dormant while others may still be active. When these volcanoes erupt, they melt ice from below instead of erupting in the air. This melting can cause ice to become unstable, which is important to track as Antarctica’s climate warms.
ANT-SGV-25 is more than just a map; it is a tool for scientists to study how volcanic heat affects ice flow in different parts of the continent. One scientist called the catalogue a “public data product,” meaning anyone worldwide can use it for research.
The discovery challenges previous ideas about Antarctica’s geology and will help guide future research. Scientists believe more volcanoes may still be hidden under the ice. This work is a big step forward in understanding the frozen world beneath Antarctica’s white sheets.
