US Arrests Key Suspect in 2012 Benghazi Terror Attack
February 7, 2026
The US Attorney General, Pam Bondi, announced on Friday the arrest of Zubayar al-Bakoush, a key participant in the 2012 Benghazi terrorist attack. This attack killed four US government officials, including US Ambassador J Christopher Stevens. Bondi said the suspect was taken into US custody at 3am ET on Friday.
"We will prosecute this alleged terrorist to the fullest extent of the law. He’ll face charges related to murder, terrorism, arson, among others," Bondi said at a press conference at the Department of Justice in Washington DC.
FBI Director Kash Patel spoke about protecting the "integrity" of the investigation and said the US carried out a "foreign transfer of custody" to bring al-Bakoush to America. The plane carrying him landed overnight at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.
The Benghazi attack on 11 September 2012 involved at least 20 Libyan militants attacking the US consulate with rifles and grenades. They set fire to buildings, killing Stevens and State Department employee Sean Smith. Two other US security officers, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, died in a later attack on a nearby annex.
A Republican-led House committee heavily criticized government security failures but found no blame for Hillary Clinton. Democrats said the investigation was politically motivated during Clinton's presidential campaign.
Jeanine Pirro, DC federal prosecutor, said al-Bakoush faces an eight-count indictment including the murders of Stevens and Smith. It is not known if he has a lawyer.
Another Benghazi suspect, Ahmed Abu Khattala, was captured in 2014, convicted on terrorism charges, but acquitted of murder. He is serving prison time.
Father, the US Justice Department stated, "We have never stopped seeking justice for that crime against our nation."
