US Government Moves to End Asylum Claim for 5-Year-Old Liam Conejo Ramos and Family
February 7, 2026
The US federal government filed a motion this week to end asylum claims for the family of 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos. Liam was detained with his father on January 20 and held at a detention center in Texas. They returned home to Minnesota recently. Immigration lawyer Danielle Molliver said the Department of Homeland Security wants to fast-track deportation proceedings. Molliver called the motion "retaliatory" and said such fast action is rare. She added, "There's absolutely no reason that this should be expedited." Democrat politician Joaquin Castro criticized the move, saying, "They are breaking legal precedent in an attempt to break this boy’s spirit and all of the Americans who are praying for him." Castro described Liam's tough time in detention: "He got sick, missed his mother and school, and was afraid of the guards." A federal judge ordered Liam's release, and Castro personally escorted him and his father home. The family fears they may still be deported. Liam's father, Adrian Conejo Arias, said, "The government is moving many pieces, it's doing everything possible to do us harm, so that they’ll probably deport us. We live with that fear too." There is a hearing set for Friday, but Molliver is asking for more time. The family might not be sent back to Ecuador, their home country, but could try to seek asylum in a third country.
