EU Labels TikTok ‘Addictive,’ Warns ByteDance of 6% Revenue Fine

The European Commission has found TikTok’s app design to be addictive and against EU digital laws. This could cost ByteDance, TikTok’s owner, a fine of up to 6% of its global revenue. The commission said TikTok’s features like infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications, and highly personalized recommendations have addictive effects. They said TikTok did not properly assess the harm these features cause to users, especially minors and vulnerable adults. “By constantly rewarding the users with new content,” the commission stated, TikTok “fuels the urge to keep scrolling and shifts the brain of users into ‘autopilot mode’.” The commission also cited scientific research connecting this behavior to compulsive use and loss of self-control.
