Hong Kong Forms New Group to Boost Autonomous Vehicle Technology and Smart Traffic
February 7, 2026
Hong Kong will set up a new working group to advance autonomous vehicle technology, announced the Transport Department on Friday. The government also plans to install real-time adaptive traffic signals and a smart motorway management system on major roads to ease traffic and improve convenience. Assistant Commissioner for Transport Leung Sai-ho said, "To further push the development of autonomous vehicles, the commissioner for transport will chair the Autonomous Vehicle Applications Promotion Group [and] push forward with the relevant work across departments and different industry stakeholders." The group will review the progress of various autonomous vehicle projects, currently tested at the airport and Tung Chung. It will oversee testing locations, vehicle types, and licensing needed for future commercial use. Leung added, "We will continue to work with the sector to introduce more autonomous vehicles to cover public roads that have more complex conditions, gain experience to improve technological standards and share the results of our research with the sector." This move aims to make Hong Kong a leader in transport innovation and smart mobility.
