Japanese 12-Year-Old Babysits Five Siblings, Sparks Child Neglect Outcry
February 7, 2026
A 12-year-old boy from Hiroshima, Japan, takes care of his five younger siblings daily while his parents work. The boy, known as Kuranosuke, wrote to a TV show asking for relief. He said he cooks, cleans, and bathes his siblings aged 10, 8, 5, 2, and less than 1. "I envy my classmates who can play freely. I am tired of being the oldest brother," he said. The TV show sent a comedian to replace him for one day. The man struggled with the chores and felt exhausted. When the boy's mother told him to "Cook the rice! Seven cups," viewers were angered. Social media revealed the mother once called her son "good to use" at age six. Many condemned the parents for neglect. One user said, "They should have prepared to look after all children instead of making the oldest babysit." Another tipped off child welfare authorities. The TV station said the father helps with childcare and they respected privacy but deleted the episode after backlash. Hiroshima's Children and Family Division said they will respond if needed. The case raised serious concerns about child neglect in working families.
