Violent Protests Shake Dhaka Against Interim Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus
February 7, 2026
Dhaka saw violent protests against the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus. Hundreds of government employees marched demanding the implementation of the Ninth National Pay Scale. They shouted slogans like "there is no rice in the stomach, development is only in words" and "injustice will be washed away with blood." Police used tear gas, water cannons, and sound grenades to disperse the crowd.
The fiercest clashes happened outside Yunus's official residence, 'Jamuna'. This was the first protest directly targeting him. "No Control Over Minority Violence In Bangladesh...": a former Indian envoy criticized Yunus's government.
At least 40 protesters were injured when security forces used lathi charge as government employees broke police barricades. Members of the Inqilab Moncho political party joined the protest. This group opposes Yunus, especially after its co-founder Sharif Osman Hadi, a radical Islamist, was shot and died recently. Protesters demanded a UN-led probe into Hadi's death.
The protests came just before elections, embarrassing the Yunus administration. Officials noted that "many foreign journalists and international observers have already arrived in the country" and urged citizens to "demonstrate the highest level of responsibility and cooperation to ensure a peaceful election."
