Hong Kong's Commerce Minister Algernon Yau has condemned a Panama court ruling that cancels CK Hutchison Holdings' right to operate two ports on the Panama Canal. He summoned Panama's Consul General Jose Ramon de Jesus Varela Fabrega to express "strong dissatisfaction and opposition" to the decision. The ruling, Yau warned, "seriously undermined international trade rules" and damages Panama's business environment. He highlighted the "massive investments and many jobs" created by CK Hutchison. Yau urged Panama to respect contract terms and create a fair environment for legally operating companies. He stated, "Hong Kong enterprises operating and investing in Panama should receive fair and reasonable treatment and protection." This was not the first time Yau summoned Panama's envoy on this issue, though no further details were provided. The Commerce and Economic Development Bureau shared these remarks on social media on Friday night.
