South Korea’s Bithumb Accidentally Sends Over $40 Billion in Bitcoin, Bitcoin Price Dips 17%
February 7, 2026
South Korea’s cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb caused a massive stir by accidentally giving away more than US$40 billion worth of Bitcoin. The company had planned to reward users with a small cash prize of 2,000 won (about US$1.40) during a promotional event. However, winners reportedly received at least 2,000 bitcoins each instead, according to media reports.
Bitcoin prices took a hit after the blunder. On Friday evening, the price of Bitcoin on Bithumb briefly dropped 17 percent to 81.1 million won. Thankfully, the price soon climbed back and last traded at 104.5 million won.
Bithumb quickly assured users that this incident was not caused by hacking or any security breach. “We would like to make it clear that this incident is unrelated to external hacking or security breaches, and there are no problems with system security or customer asset management,” said the exchange in a statement.
Despite this slip-up, Bithumb remains a key player in the South Korean crypto market but still trails behind Upbit, the dominant exchange in the region.
