Russia Launches Massive Attack on Ukraine Power Grid Amid Peace Talks

Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine’s power grid, causing power outages in freezing weather. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians lost heating and lighting due to the damage. Ukrenergo, the Ukrainian grid operator, said on Telegram, "Russia is carrying out another massive attack on the Ukrainian power grid facilities." Emergency outages are in place across many regions. Work to restore power will start when it's safe.
Despite two rounds of US-led peace talks in Abu Dhabi, no deal on territory has been reached. Moscow accused Ukraine of trying to kill a Russian intelligence general in Moscow, but Kyiv stayed silent.
President Zelensky discussed new air defense measures with his defense and air force chiefs but shared no details.
Russian forces fired 328 drones and 7 missiles overnight, with Ukrainian air defenses shooting down 297 drones. One person died and two were hurt in attacks on the Dnipropetrovsk region. The southern Zaporizhzhia area was hit too, causing injuries and damage to 18 residential blocks.
A dog shelter was struck, killing 13 dogs and injuring 7 others, who are receiving care.
In Kyiv, over 1,200 homes lost heating for days due to the attacks, worsening cold conditions. The UK defense ministry called Ukraine’s power crisis the worst this winter. Pensioner Mykola Tromza said he felt like "an icicle" without heating and had to keep moving to stay warm.
Fighting continues along a 1,200 km front line in east and south Ukraine. Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi said new drone tech has expanded the high-risk zone for soldiers to 20 km deep.
