On February 5, 2026, a blast struck an illegal coal mine in the Thangsku area of Umsngat village, East Jaintia Hills district, Meghalaya. Twenty-five people died, and several remain missing as rescue operations continue. Police said multiple agencies are involved in the search efforts. A suo motu FIR was registered at Khliehriat police station under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Mines and Minerals Act, and Explosive Substances Act. Two accused, Forme Chyrmang (36) from Jalaphet Pordung village and Shamehi War (42) from Sutnga Pohwailong village, have been arrested. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma stated, "the government has zero tolerance for illegal coal mining and strict action will be taken against all those involved." He also ordered intensified enforcement and accountability. Justice (retired) B.P. Katakey, overseeing mining compliance, visited Thangsku and confirmed large-scale illegal mining activity in the area.
