On February 7, 2026, West Bengal Speaker Biman Banerjee allowed Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay to move a proposal in the Assembly condemning BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul's remarks on madrasa funding. The comments were made during the interim budget discussion on February 6, 2026. Speaker Banerjee said, "I had already made it clear yesterday that such comments will not be allowed." Chattopadhyay and other senior members alleged that Paul's remarks were against the secular spirit of the country and the House. He claimed Paul said that funding madrasa education means supporting "a section of anti-social elements among the minority community," which he called "hateful and extremely dangerous." BJP MLAs reacted by staging a walkout. Senior BJP MLA Mihir Goswami called the TMC government an "appeasement government" and said, "We did not wish to boycott the proceedings on the last day of this session before the elections." He also denied that Paul’s comments were offensive and claimed no part of her speech was actually expunged. Goswami further alleged that pressure from TMC ministers prompted the speaker’s actions. The BJP MLAs later returned to the House after the brief protest. Speaker Banerjee confirmed that Paul's comments were removed from the official records, and the matter was under his consideration for further action.
