India Dominates Global Cricket Amid Boycotts, ICC Bias in T20 World Cup
February 7, 2026
The cricket world is seeing major disruptions as political tensions influence the sport’s global scene. Pakistan has announced a boycott of its T20 World Cup match against India. The International Cricket Council (ICC) quickly criticized Pakistan’s decision, saying it hurts fans worldwide, especially those in Pakistan who miss out on watching India. Earlier, Bangladesh was forced out of the tournament after the ICC pressured its cricket board over match venues. The ICC said these moves protect the "integrity and sanctity" of the World Cup, stressing fairness. Yet, many see these as double standards. India has never been censured for refusing to play in Pakistan, while Pakistan’s teams face exclusions. India's cricket economy fuels this power imbalance. Since a 2014 ICC reshuffle favoring India, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) earns nearly 40% of ICC’s net revenues. Indian cricket events like the IPL dominate the calendar, pressuring smaller boards to comply or lose vital tours and funds. Bangladesh’s removal weakens the competition, replaced by Scotland, whose cricket status is much lower. Other boards like Sri Lanka, West Indies, Zimbabwe, and South Africa face challenges but rely heavily on Indian money and influence. Smaller cricket nations have long supported India’s rise, hoping for survival. However, the current situation shows how India’s cricket powerhouse may soon impose even stricter terms. Cricket’s ties to money and politics now overshadow fairness, and the ICC’s promises of neutrality seem hollow. The sport stands at a crossroads as economic might overrides sporting spirit.
