WASHINGTON: An elephant figurine made of artificial pearls and semi-precious stones, gifted by then Indian Home Minister Lal Krishna Advani to US Secretary of State Colin Powell in 2002, is now displayed at the US State Department. According to the Department, it is among fewer than 50 select gifts from hundreds received by Secretaries of State shown at the exhibit hall in the Henry S Truman Building. The figurine depicts a great man riding in a howdah while led by a mahout, symbolizing India's historical use of elephants for transport, battle, and protection. Crafted by Indian enamelware artist Neeru Goel from Bengal, the figurine represents the elephant as a cultural icon symbolizing wealth, wisdom, and strength. The State Department describes the piece with pride: "with royal aplomb, the great man rides in the howdah, or canopied seat, as the mahout or guide in front leads the elephant." This display highlights the special cultural link between India and the US through this unique gift.
