M Rajeevan from the National Atmospheric Research Laboratory said, "the failure to predict the 2009 drought has raised many serious issues." He spoke at the 50th anniversary conference of the Indian Institute of Climate Change (IITM), Pune. The topic was 'Opportunities and Challenges in Monsoon Prediction in Changing Climate.' Since 2011, IITM has used coupled ocean-atmosphere models to forecast the monsoon. These models have shown improved skill in predicting year-to-year changes in the Indian summer monsoon rainfall. Michel Jarraud, secretary general of the World Meteorological Organisation, highlighted the need for global cooperation. He said, "In every part of the world, farmers are saying that the climate is not as it used to be. Hence, traditional knowledge is also failing." He stressed that better weather prediction requires observations from all countries. He added, "We need super computers of even higher capacities. We need to have knowledge about how to translate scientific progress into concrete applications."
