A recent survey by the Telangana Senior Resident Doctors' Association (T-SRDA) shows a big shortage of teachers in Telangana's Government Medical Colleges. Out of 443 MBBS student responses across many colleges, 27 departments have no professors, associate professors, or assistant professors. “Academically, such departments exist only on paper and are effectively non-functional,” said T-SRDA. According to Dr. Srinath, T-SRDA President, each department should have at least 1 Professor, 1 Associate Professor, and 2 Assistant Professors per 100 MBBS students as per National Medical Commission (NMC) rules. Many colleges, especially newer ones like GMC Jogulamba Gadwal and GMC Asifabad, have departments with zero faculty. The shortage of senior staff is worse, with over 150 departments having no Professors or Associate Professors. More than 70% of department units lack a single Professor. Professors are mostly found in older colleges like Osmania Medical College and Gandhi Medical College. The pre-clinical and para-clinical departments such as Anatomy and Physiology suffer the most. More than 120 departments are run by just one assistant professor handling all duties. Many staff members are on short contracts or are rotating Senior Residents. Several departments report “No regular faculty”, only contractual staff or Senior Residents teaching. This data raises concerns about the quality, regulations, and future of medical education in Telangana.
