The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) arrested Saiju A.G., a revenue inspector at Maradu municipality, on February 7. He was caught red-handed taking a ₹3,000 bribe from a resident of Champakkara. Saiju allegedly demanded the bribe to issue ownership certificates for two houses the resident bought in her daughter and son-in-law's name, who work abroad. VACB reported that Saiju had inspected the two houses after the ownership change application was submitted online on January 3. When the resident asked why the certificate was delayed, he asked for ₹5,000 and forced her to pay ₹2,000 immediately. He told her he could issue a certificate for only one house and advised her to apply online for the second. She did apply again, and on February 6, he asked for ₹3,000 more. The woman then filed a complaint with T.M. Varghese, Deputy Superintendent of Police, VACB Ernakulam unit. The VACB set a trap and arrested Saiju at his office around 12:50 p.m. The accused will be presented before the Vigilance court in Muvattupuzha.
