Police have arrested two members of a six-person gang involved in a gang rape and extortion at an Ayurvedic spa in Thiruvalla. The gang barged into the spa, demanded money, and raped a woman staff member at knifepoint. The spa owner says the attack happened because of a 'quotation' issued by a rival competitor. Police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident. The survivor and spa owner have given their statements. Police are also checking if the spa was involved in any illegal activities. District Police Chief R. Anand said, "Steps have been taken to extend all legal support to the survivor through the District Legal Services Authority and to provide her with counselling. The police are also moving ahead with plans to invoke the Kerala Anti Social Activities Prevention Act against Subin Alexander, the prime accused in the case, to place him under preventive custody." Anand denied claims that police officers were involved in monthly extortion from local spas. "We have not unearthed any such allegations in connection with this case. However, action has been taken earlier against those who were accused of engaging in such activities," he said. The case came to light after a Special Branch officer alerted police, as both the survivor and spa owner initially hesitated to file a complaint. The police chief said, "The officer directly briefed me about the incident, and based on that information, a case was registered." Regarding a co-worker who stayed friendly with the accused during the crime, Anand said the matter is being investigated and action will be taken if needed. The survivor revealed the accused forced her to demand ₹3 lakh from the spa owner, already taking ₹50,000. They threatened to release a video of the assault if payment was not made. Police are searching for the remaining four gang members and investigating if others took part in the crime.
