US Releases India Map Including PoK with New Trade Deal Framework Signaling Strategic Support
February 7, 2026
In a strong diplomatic move, the Trump administration on Friday released a map of India that includes the entire Jammu and Kashmir region, including Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Aksai Chin. The map was shared by the US Trade Representative on X, alongside news of a framework for an interim trade agreement between the US and India.
This is a clear change from past US practice, which often showed PoK and Aksai Chin as disputed territories. Analysts say this is a strategic gesture supporting India's claims, which could upset Pakistan and China. It also shows the US returning to a policy of supporting India as a key player in the Indo-Pacific region.
The map release marks the end of decades of US neutrality on this sensitive border issue. By officially recognizing India's borders, the US signals that India is more than just a partner; it is the main regional ally for American interests in Asia. This move comes alongside US demands for India to stop importing Russian oil, showing that US support depends on a strong alliance.
Experts believe this map was a crucial, though quiet, part of the "Grand Bargain" agreed upon by President Trump and Prime Minister Modi. While the focus was on lowering tariffs from 50% to 18% and India's promise to buy $500 billion in American goods, the map offers India a big win on the diplomatic front.
Defense analyst Major Gaurav Arya praised the map, saying, "Full marks to the US for the map. Well done," marking a clear end to US depictions of PoK as Pakistani territory. In India, social media trended with #AkhandBharat, celebrating recognition of India's full territory. Meanwhile, Pakistani internet users expressed deep concern and saw the move as a breach of diplomatic norms.
