PTI to Hold Nationwide Protests on Feb 8 Despite Mourning After Islamabad Bombing
February 8, 2026
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) will hold nationwide protests on Sunday, Feb 8, marking two years since the party alleges the general election was rigged. PTI leader Asad Qaiser told Dawn the protest plans were not postponed or cancelled. "The day will be observed as a National Day of Mourning and, at the same time, protests will be held across the country against rigging in the general election," he said.
Qaiser said Feb 8 was about the whole nation being deprived of democracy, not just about Imran Khan or PTI leaders. "It is a day on which the nation was deprived of democracy and the right to choose its representatives," he said. Protests and a shutter-down strike will take place to oppose the alleged election manipulation.
The party and its opposition alliance, TTAP, continue to push to restore democracy and uphold the rule of law. PTI has formed 10 committees at different levels to rally support for the protests.
PTI Islamabad President Amir Mughal said protests will combine with mourning activities after the suicide bombing in Islamabad’s Tarlai area that killed at least 36 people. He claimed a focus on cracking down on PTI workers weakened the city’s security. "If police had focused on the security of the federal capital, the suicide attacker may not have entered the city," he added.
In Punjab, PTI plans "silent agitation" with people staying home and markets closed voluntarily in a shutter-down and wheel-jam strike. Pamphlets with messages like "Imran Khan is not imprisoned" have been distributed. Punjab PTI chief organiser Aliya Hamza Malik urged people to stay indoors and join torch rallies after Maghrib prayers. She called these protests crucial for Imran Khan’s release from jail.
PTI leaders in Punjab criticized police raids and arrests, saying families were harassed during searches.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, PTI will hold rallies and processions at district and tehsil levels, with participation from traders and transport unions. MNAs and MPAs will lead these demonstrations. Peshawar workers will gather at Hashtnagri before marching, with a rally at Chowk Yadgar.
Police arrested 30 PTI workers in Okara ahead of the protests. MNA Usama Hamza’s home was raided but he was not there. Party activists Mehr Abdul Sattar was detained under the MPO ordinance for seven days.
The nationwide protests will highlight PTI’s ongoing fight against what it calls a "Form-47 government that stole the people’s mandate."
