KARACHI: Two female polio workers and a policeman escorting them were injured in separate attacks by stray dogs on Saturday. One female worker was attacked in Zaman Town, Korangi, and the other in Malir Cantonment. A policeman in Quaidabad was also bitten while escorting the team. He received treatment at Indus Hospital. Sindh Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) spokesperson Minahil Mustafa confirmed the two attacks on female workers and said, "The safety of our frontline workers is our highest priority, and we stand fully with our teams." The cases were managed immediately according to health and safety protocols with support from local government bodies. Aftab Gohar, Rabies Prevention and Training Centre Manager at Indus Hospital, confirmed the policeman's injury as a Category II dog bite. He was treated and scheduled for follow-up doses. This year, two to three polio workers have been treated for dog bites at the hospital, including a woman in her late 30s. Gohar noted that daily dog bite cases range from 150 to 200 at Indus Hospital. He stressed the need for controlling stray dog populations, training healthcare providers in post-exposure treatment, and raising public awareness. Recently, Karachi reported another rabies case, bringing the province's total to three this year. Last year, rabies killed at least 22 people. Over 41,000 dog bite cases were recorded at three major Karachi hospitals last year, demonstrating the growing health danger from stray dogs.
