Giant Trump Statue Stalled Amid Crypto Drama, Payment Disputes
February 8, 2026
A giant gold-leafed 15-foot bronze statue of US President Donald Trump is lying on its back in an Ohio studio. Called "Don Colossus," it shows Trump raising his fist after surviving a 2024 assassination attempt. The statue was made for $360,000 by cryptocurrency entrepreneurs who support Trump’s 2024 campaign. But it has not been formally set up yet because the sculptor, Alan Cottrill, says he has not been fully paid. "I would be a fool to install it without the payment being made, and I am not a fool," said Cottrill, 73. He says he is still owed about $92,000. The elephant-sized statue weighs 6,000 pounds and is meant to stand two storeys tall on its base. The delay highlights problems in the crypto world backing Trump. Cottrill claims the backers used pictures of the statue to promote a $PATRIOT meme coin without his permission. Meme coins are digital assets that rely on hype rather than real value. Trump’s ties to crypto have sparked debates about conflicts of interest. Bloomberg reports the Trump family earned $1.4 billion last year from digital assets. The $PATRIOT coin launched in November 2024 and gained popularity as Trump won the US election that month. But before Trump’s January inauguration, he launched his own $TRUMP cryptocurrency. After this, $PATRIOT’s value plummeted by more than 95%. People behind $PATRIOT include Republican strategist Dustin Stockton, who faced a federal probe linked to a fraud case involving Trump aide Steve Bannon. Stockton did not reply to comments. Cottrill is proud of his art. He has sculpted 17 US presidents and spent four months creating this huge statue. He joked about sculpting Trump’s "turkey neck" but was told to make it look nicer. Sculpting Trump’s famous hair was tough, too. "You can’t sculpt and cast something that is... wispy," he said. Talking about working in crypto, Cottrill was clear: "The short answer is, I won’t do it again." After more than a year, the statue might soon move to Trump National Doral golf resort in Miami. Cottrill installed its heavy base there last month, but no unveiling date is set.
