The Department of Animal Husbandry in Puducherry has issued an alert after H5N1 avian influenza was found in a dead crow in Chennai. Migratory birds visiting local wetlands may carry the virus without symptoms and could pass it to domestic birds. Officials have increased checks in wetlands, poultry farms, and live markets. Veterinary teams are educating farmers to follow strict biosecurity rules. These include stopping wild and domestic birds from contacting, limiting farm visitors, and reporting dead birds quickly. "Rapid response teams are ready to handle any suspected cases as per Government of India guidelines," said an official. Residents are warned not to touch sick or dead birds and to notify authorities if unusual bird deaths happen. The department also advises tracking the sources of chickens, eggs, or poultry products sold. They assured that cooked poultry meat and eggs are safe to eat and said, "there is no cause for panic." The situation is closely watched with safety steps to protect poultry and the public.
