Israel Returns 54 Unidentified Palestinian Bodies to Gaza Amid Signs of Abuse
February 8, 2026
Israel has returned 54 Palestinian bodies and human remains to Gaza without revealing any details about their identities or how they died, Palestinian medical officials say. The bodies arrived at al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City on Wednesday inside plain white bags. Forensic teams are now examining the remains to identify them and help grieving families. Palestinian medics report multiple bodies were mutilated, showing harsh abuse. "The International Committee of the Red Cross handed over 120 body bags containing 54 bodies as well as skull samples placed in 66 separate bags," said forensic official Omar Suleiman. Previous returns of Palestinian detainees' bodies showed many had signs of torture, mutilation, and execution. In November, Physicians for Human Rights-Israel reported at least 94 Palestinians had died in Israeli custody due to causes like torture and neglect. Many more might have died. Some families, like that of Shadi al-Fayoumi, still search for missing relatives. His brothers disappeared 10 months ago in Gaza's Tuffah neighborhood while seeking food and water during famine. At al-Shifa, he looked through blurred images hoping to identify them but found no clear signs. "My brothers have been missing for 10 months. They disappeared in the Tuffah neighbourhood," al-Fayoumi told Al Jazeera. "How are we expected to identify them under these conditions?" His mother remains "inconsolable," reports Al Jazeera's Ibrahim al-Khalili. The bodies come with no information on cause of death or detention duration. Palestinians face deep grief and many unanswered questions as Israeli forces return bodies "with little regard for human dignity," according to al-Khalili.
