Portugal's Presidential Runoff: Seguro Set to Defeat Ventura in Key Vote
February 8, 2026
Portugal's presidential runoff election is underway today, with centre-left candidate António José Seguro strongly favoured to defeat far-right populist André Ventura. Polls show Seguro may get twice as many votes as Ventura in this head-to-head battle. Voting started at 8am and will end 12 hours later, with results expected by 11pm local time. With 11 million voters, this election tests support for Ventura’s bold and combative politics.
Seguro, a veteran Socialist, presents himself as a moderate willing to work with Portugal’s centre-right government. He has attracted support from mainstream politicians opposing Ventura’s anti-immigration and anti-establishment messages. Ventura, leader of the Chega party founded less than seven years ago, has grown into a significant political force. His party became Portugal’s second-largest in the recent general election.
Ventura is known for his theatrical style and tough stance on immigration, with slogans such as "Portugal is ours," and billboards stating, "This isn’t Bangladesh" and "Immigrants shouldn’t be allowed to live on welfare." Meanwhile, the president of Portugal holds a largely ceremonial role but can veto laws and dissolve parliament, a power known as the "atomic bomb." The winner will succeed centre-right President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who has served two terms.
The vote reflects Portugal’s political mood after three general elections in three years and rising populism across Europe. Will Seguro’s steady hand triumph or will Ventura’s rise reshape Portuguese politics? Results will reveal the answer by tonight.
