The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to build a 650-meter soundproof barrier along the Mysuru–Kushalnagar highway near the Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary. This barrier will reduce noise pollution and protect birds in this eco-sensitive zone. NHAI’s Regional Officer Vilas P. Brahmankar said, "Wildlife clearance is mandatory as the project alignment passes close to protected areas." The highway also touches the buffer zone of Nagarahole Tiger Reserve. The soundproof wall, standing 2 to 5 metres high, will absorb and deflect traffic noise, keeping it within safe limits for birds. The project has clearance from the State Wildlife Board and is awaiting final approval from the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL). The 92.3-km access-controlled highway is designed to handle increasing traffic on the Bengaluru–Mysuru–Madikeri corridor. After completion, the road will cut travel time between Bengaluru and Kushalnagar and ease congestion in Mysuru by bypassing the city. This ₹4,130-crore project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2023 but faced delays due to land acquisition issues and legal disputes. Once ready, the highway will improve travel for commuters and tourists heading toward Mysuru, Madikeri, and parts of Kerala via Kodagu. The soundproof barrier is a crucial step to balance infrastructure development and wildlife protection.
