AutoFlight, a Shanghai-based company backed by CATL, has unveiled Matrix, the world’s largest electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The 11,000-pound plane has a 20-metre wingspan and can carry 10 passengers. It comes in two versions: one for passengers and one for heavy logistics. This is a big jump from typical eVTOLs that carry 4 to 6 people and weigh 1.5 to 3 tonnes. AutoFlight completed a flight test in Kunshan near Shanghai to showcase Matrix. The company joins others like Ehang, Xpeng’s Aridge, and Geely’s Aerofugia in China's fast-growing eVTOL sector. China is also pushing to regulate this new airspace. Last week, 10 government departments announced plans to set over 300 rules by 2030 covering aircraft, infrastructure, air traffic, safety, and more. Xie Jia, AutoFlight’s senior vice-president, said the company started with cargo but now sees great potential in passenger flights.
