A memorial for the victims of the New Year party fire in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, caught fire early Sunday. Police said candles left burning inside likely started the blaze. The original fire at Le Constellation bar claimed 41 lives and injured 115 people on January 1. The tribute, filled with flowers, candles, and messages, was near the burnt bar site. The regional police of Valais reported the memorial fire just before 6am and credited quick emergency response for stopping flames fast. No injuries occurred, but "several commemorative objects were damaged by the flames," police added. A large book of remembrance with condolence messages was saved. The memorial had been recently moved farther from the bar. Police stated, "According to initial reports, the fire started near the candles placed on a table in the centre of the memorial." They also noted, "At this stage, third-party involvement can be ruled out." Investigators say the original New Year blaze started when champagne bottles with sparklers ignited the bar’s ceiling foam. The bar owners Jacques and Jessica Moretti face charges of manslaughter, bodily harm, and arson by negligence. Investigations also involve the local public safety head and a former fire safety officer because the bar lacked fire inspections since 2019. Families of the victims expressed shock and criticized authorities after hearing about the memorial fire. Laetitia Brodard-Sitre, whose 16-year-old son was among the deceased, said on Facebook, "What to say? It is the municipality's responsibility to ensure a memorial that is secure."
