A memorial for victims of a deadly New Year’s fire in Switzerland caught fire early on Sunday. The tribute was for 41 people who died and 115 injured in the January 1 fire at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana. The memorial stood near the scene and included flowers, candles, and condolence messages. Police said candles left burning inside likely caused the fire. It started shortly before 6 am in the Wallis canton. Swiss public broadcaster RTS showed images of the charred remains of the white tarpaulin set up to protect the memorial. Police said, “Thanks to the rapid intervention of the emergency services, the fire was quickly brought under control.” Families who lost loved ones expressed dismay as some items were destroyed, though a condolence book was saved. This fire adds to the grief after the tragic New Year’s event at the ski resort.
