Thrissur woke up early Sunday to the sound of bicycle wheels as more than 100 cyclists gathered at Thekke Gopura Nada, Thekkinkadu Maidan. They joined a cyclothon organised by Indian Oil Corporation Ltd with support from The Hindu in School. The event started at 6:45 a.m., flagged off by Thrissur District Collector Arjun Pandian. It is part of the nationwide SAKSHAM 2025–26 campaign running from February 1 to 15 to encourage fuel saving and green energy. Mr. Pandian urged all citizens, especially young people, to make cycling a regular habit. He noted cycling is great for personal health and the environment. "Cycling is good for health and it also helps conserve fuel. It can prevent blocks—not just on the roads, but in your heart as well," said neurologist Dr. Fiju Chacko, drawing smiles and applause. The event featured riders from young students like Ashuthosh K. and Ashil Kamar from Class VII to experienced adults. Five women also joined, including 24-year-old Sophia N.J., who has been cycling since age 10 and participates in cyclothons regularly. Led by the Cyclers Thrissur group, the riders covered 10 km, passing key city spots such as Municipal Corporation Road, Sakthan Bus Stand, KSRTC Road, Poothole, and St. Thomas College Road. The ride took about 45 minutes, turning the streets into a vibrant show of support for a greener tomorrow. The cyclothon ended with a prize ceremony celebrating all participants' commitment to cleaner air, healthier lives, and a sustainable future for Thrissur.
