Thailand Election Update: Conservatives Led by PM Anutin Take Early Lead
February 8, 2026
Thailand’s conservative Bhumjaithai Party, led by caretaker Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, is leading in the country’s election. Unofficial results with about 25% of votes counted show Bhumjaithai on track for nearly 100 seats. The reformist People’s Party is behind with 90 seats. Analysts say Bhumjaithai could reach 150 seats or more once all votes are counted. This would give the party a strong position to form a coalition government easily, surpassing the 251-seat majority needed in the 500-seat lower house.
Bhumjaithai had only been in government for about three months before Anutin called the snap election to seek a fresh mandate. The party’s message of stability appears to have resonated with voters. Nationalist feelings, stirred by a border dispute with Cambodia, also helped Bhumjaithai's popularity.
The election was expected to be a close race between Bhumjaithai and the reformist People’s Party. However, so far, the conservative party holds the advantage. The coming days will show if Bhumjaithai can maintain its lead and form the next government.
