Palestinian Protester Leqaa Kordia Hospitalised After Seizure in US ICE Detention
February 8, 2026
Leqaa Kordia, a 33-year-old Palestinian woman detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since March 2025, was rushed to hospital after a seizure inside the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas. Her legal team and family have not been able to reach her or confirm her exact whereabouts following the incident. Kordia was detained under charges of overstaying her student visa but her supporters claim she was targeted for participating in pro-Palestinian protests near Columbia University in New York during 2024. Kordia grew up in Ramallah, West Bank, and came to the US in 2016 on a visitor visa. She later switched to a student visa and had her green card approved in 2021. However, due to incorrect advice, her student visa expired in 2022. Before arrest, she worked at a Middle Eastern restaurant in New Jersey and cared for her autistic half-brother. Since the Gaza war began in October 2023, she lost over 200 relatives. Kordia denies being a political activist but says speaking out against violence in Gaza is a moral duty. She was first arrested in April 2024 during protests at Columbia University, though charges were dropped then. In March 2025, after attending what she thought were routine ICE questions in Newark, she was detained and moved over 1500 miles away to Texas. Her detention conditions are harsh, with reports of overcrowding and denial of religious accommodations such as halal meals. Amnesty International and politicians have condemned her treatment, calling her a political prisoner. An immigration judge has twice ordered her release, but administrative delays have kept her confined. On Friday, she fainted, hit her head, and suffered a seizure, leading to hospitalisation. Her family demands detailed information on her health and status, currently withheld. The Columbia protests in 2024, involving Palestinian student activism, sparked nationwide attention amid calls for an end to Israel's military actions in Gaza. Several protesters were arrested and expelled, with university leadership facing criticism. Kordia remains the only Columbia protester still detained by ICE.
