Iran Ready for Nuclear Talks, Rejects US Military Build-Up Amid Rising Tensions
February 8, 2026
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran is ready for nuclear negotiations next week with the US, based on rights under the Non-Proliferation Treaty. He wrote on X, "The Iranian nation has always responded to respect with respect, but cannot withstand the language of force." Officials recently held indirect talks in Oman, which Pezeshkian called a “step forward.” Iran insists that talks focus only on nuclear issues and firmly opposes US military build-up in the region.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated at a Tehran forum that Iran values independence since its 1979 revolution and will not stop civilian nuclear enrichment even if it leads to attacks. He said to US envoys in Muscat, "there is no way but negotiations." Araghchi warned against fear, calling US military presence near Iran a “lethal poison.”
Iran's top military commander, Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, warned that any attack on Iran could trigger a regional war. He stressed Iran's preparedness for a long-term conflict and blamed the US and Israel for possible regional setbacks.
Meanwhile, one month after nationwide protests that killed thousands, Iran remains tense. State media airs forced confessions of arrested protesters blamed on foreign agents. The government claims over 3,100 dead, but rights groups report up to 7,000 or more. Families continue to mourn their lost loved ones, sharing stories online. A viral message on Instagram remembers those who "lived for the last time and never returned."
Iran prepares for its revolution anniversary on Wednesday amid these ongoing political and social challenges.
