SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: A policeman was killed, and two family members injured after unidentified armed men fired at them on Sunday in South Waziristan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The attack took place in Boya area of Upper South Waziristan. Constable Zahidullah Wazir died instantly. His father, Ghulam Nabi, and brother, Waheed, were seriously hurt. All belonged to Shakai tehsil. DSP Asghar Ali Shah told Dawn, "The martyred police constable was the brother of Muhammad Jan Wazir, a political moharrir of the district administration, Lower South Waziristan." He added, "The condition of the injured persons is critical; however, they are being provided immediate medical treatment." The assailants fled the scene immediately. Police arrived quickly, cordoned off the area, and collected evidence. The injured and the dead constable were taken to DHQ Hospital Wana, where treatment is ongoing. Police have launched an investigation to understand the motive. DSP Shah said, "The family of political Moharrir Wazir had no personal enmity with anyone, and initial evidence suggested that the incident was an act of terrorism." The law and order in South and North Waziristan has worsened since November 2022. This deterioration followed the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) breaking a ceasefire and vowing to target security forces. Recent months saw increased bomb blasts, targeted killings, kidnappings, and attacks on police posts in the tribal districts of KP. These incidents have raised grave concerns among local tribes and threaten peace in the region.
