Mexican Immigrant Alleges Brutal Beating by ICE in Minnesota, Faces Severe Head Injuries
February 8, 2026
A 31-year-old Mexican immigrant, Alberto Castañeda Mondragón, claims he was brutally beaten by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in Minnesota last month. He alleges the officers attacked him without any reason on January 8 outside a shopping centre in St. Paul. "They started beating me right away when they arrested me," he said. He describes being thrown to the ground, punched, handcuffed, and hit on the head with a steel baton. The assault continued inside a detention vehicle and later at a facility. Mondragón said, "They were very racist people. No one insulted them, neither me nor the other person they detained me with. It was their character, their racism toward us, for being immigrants." ICE officers claim he ran into a brick wall during detention, a claim he denies. "There was never a wall," he said, adding officers used an ASP baton to hit him. Doctors at Hennepin County Medical Center found eight skull fractures and five brain hemorrhages. Medical experts questioned ICE’s explanation of his injuries. A federal judge ruled his arrest unlawful and ordered his release. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz demanded: "Law enforcement cannot be lawless." St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her and Congress members have also called for answers. DHS and ICE have not commented on the incident.
