PESHAWAR: Militants attacked police post number 8 in Passani village near Peshawar, officials said. The police at the checkpoint fired back after the attack. Peshawar CCPO Dr Mian Saeed Ahmed told Dawn, "The militants attacked the police post number 8, and an exchange of fire also took place, but the policemen, deployed at the facility, retaliated and the militants escaped." He said the situation was "under control." So far, no injuries or casualties have been reported on either side. The nature of the attack and losses are still being assessed. Earlier, on November 26, a gas pipeline near the area was blown up by unknown persons, causing a fire. A police official said this was the second time the pipeline was damaged—terrorists had blown it up two years ago. Last year on August 15, militants tried three separate attacks near Mattani police station. According to police, they fired using advanced weapons from a nearby forest, but police repulsed all attacks without casualties. These attacks were at Hameed Khan checkpoint, Fort Mackson (Kishangar post), and Azakhel Dam post. All were defended successfully by security forces.
