A building collapse in Tripoli, Lebanon, killed at least five people on Sunday. The state-run National News Agency reported the collapse happened in Bab al-Tabbaneh, the poorest area of Tripoli. Rescue teams have saved eight people so far and found five victims, including a child and an elderly woman. The building had two blocks with six flats each. Security forces evacuated nearby buildings fearing more collapses. Images showed rescuers and residents clearing debris with bare hands and simple tools. This is the second such deadly incident in Tripoli in weeks. President Joseph Aoun has urged all emergency services to help with rescue operations and provide shelter for those affected. Many buildings in Tripoli were built illegally during the civil war or have unsafe additions. Residents had warned about unsafe housing conditions even before the February 2023 earthquake. Lebanon’s long economic crisis has made repairs and alternative housing unaffordable for many. Authorities have been called to urgently assess building safety across the country.
