Limited Palestinians Cross Rafah Border as Gaza-Egypt Crossing Reopens Amid Ceasefire
February 9, 2026
The Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt reopened Sunday after two days of closure, allowing a limited number of Palestinians to cross, Egyptian state media reported. The vital crossing opened last week as part of a US-backed ceasefire deal. Egypt's Al Qahera TV said Palestinians began crossing both ways around noon Sunday, but Israel did not immediately confirm this. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected in Washington this week; Iran will be the main discussion topic, his office said. In the first four days since reopening, only 36 Palestinians needing medical care and 62 companions left Gaza, UN data shows. Palestinian officials say nearly 20,000 in Gaza seek medical exits due to lack of local care. Those who crossed reported delays and claims of mistreatment by Israeli forces and the Israeli-backed Palestinian armed group Abu Shabab. A Palestinian family spoke about their relative, Amjad Abu Jedian, injured by an Israeli sniper while working, now selected to leave Sunday for treatment. The family urged care for patients and requested no added burdens from Israeli military. Some Palestinians returned from Egypt to Gaza Sunday, facing hours of delay and intrusive searches. The crossing is managed by EU and Palestinian officials, with Israel operating a distant screening point. The Rafah crossing was Gaza’s only border not controlled by Israel before the war; Israel took control of its side in May 2024 and imposed restrictions on movement. Only 50 people may return to Gaza daily and 50 patients with two companions can leave, but far fewer have crossed so far. A senior Hamas leader, Khaled Mashaal, said Hamas is open to discussing arms as part of a “balanced approach” including Gaza’s reconstruction and protection. Speaking in Doha, he offered options such as a long-term truce, disarmament guarantees over 10 years, and an international peacekeeping force to avoid clashes. Israel demands full Hamas disarmament and destruction of its infrastructure. Mashaal accused Israel of arming local militias like Abu Shabab to create chaos. Asked about US-led peace efforts, he said Hamas rejects “foreign intervention” in Palestinian matters, saying, “Gaza is for the people of Gaza. Palestinians are for the people of Palestine.”
