Memorial for 41 Victims of Swiss Nightclub Fire Burns Down in Crans-Montana
February 9, 2026
A memorial honouring the 41 victims of the New Year’s Day nightclub fire in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, caught fire early Sunday. The tribute site was a tent filled with flowers, candles, and handwritten notes near the Le Constellation club. The blaze started just before 6 a.m. and was quickly controlled by emergency services. No one was hurt. Police suggested that live candles placed in the centre of the memorial may have set fire to the tarpaulin tent. Authorities ruled out third-party involvement but opened a criminal inquiry to find out the exact cause. Several items were damaged, but a book of condolences survived intact. Officials said the memorial is being rebuilt. The original fire on January 1 killed 41 people and injured at least 115. Investigators think the fire started when sparklers touched flammable soundproofing foam in the club’s basement ceiling. Videos and testimonies showed panic as flames spread in seconds. It is also alleged that an emergency exit door was locked, hampering escape. Club owners Jacques Moretti, 49, and Jessica Moretti, 40, are charged with manslaughter by negligence, bodily harm by negligence, and arson by negligence. They deny wrongdoing and are on bail. Local safety officials face investigations because the venue had no fire inspections since 2019. Families of victims expressed sadness over the memorial fire. Laetitia Brodard-Sitre, who lost her 16-year-old son, said, “It is the municipality’s responsibility to ensure a memorial that is secure.” Investigations into both the original and memorial fires are ongoing.
