Nepal Fans Light Up Wankhede Stadium Despite Narrow England Loss in T20 World Cup
February 9, 2026
Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium was buzzing with Nepalese fans on Sunday as their cricket team clashed against England in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Thousands of fans in red and blue filled the 33,000-seat stadium, singing and dancing with drums and Nepali tunes. Banners reading “Feel the Thrill” captured the thrilling atmosphere.
Despite facing two-time champions England, Nepal's team played bravely. Chasing 185 runs, the Rhinos nearly won, but fell short on the last ball. Lokesh Bam's late hitting, along with strong performances from Rohit Paudel and Dipendra Singh Airee, pushed the game to the final moment.
Nepal fan Subodh Dhakal from Kathmandu said, “We almost won but couldn’t go through because the players lack experience. Experience will come with time, but the team played well.” Dhakal traveled with his wife just to watch the match live.
Other fans like Satyam Pokhrel are optimistic. He said, “Nepal had a really good chance [to win], but were unlucky. The match was very close; I’m proud of the team. They showed great energy and are capable of winning the upcoming games.”
Nepal has a growing cricket reputation. They previously beat West Indies in a 2-1 series and nearly upset South Africa in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Their debut in 2014 saw a win against Afghanistan.
Some fans made long journeys to witness the game. Bhuvan Rawal took a 3-day bus ride from Tikapur, Nepal. “Watching Nepal play at a World Cup is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me,” he said. “Mumbai is our second home now!”
Rawal stressed that Nepal should not be underestimated. “No team is too small to challenge the giants,” he said, highlighting the fearless spirit of his country’s cricket team.
