Man Seriously Hurt by Wild Elephant in Tripura’s Khowai Forest
February 9, 2026
A man named Dhananjay Biswas was badly hurt by a wild elephant in a forest in Khowai district, Tripura, on Sunday, February 8, 2026. His family said he had gone to Chakmaghat forest to graze cows. The 60-year-old was admitted to a government hospital in Teliamura with serious injuries to his legs and body. Witnesses told his son that the elephant grabbed Dhananjay with its trunk and slammed him to the ground. Villagers rushed to help and raised a loud noise to scare the elephant away. The areas around Teliamura and Khowai often face wild elephant raids. These elephants damage crops and homes and have caused several deaths in recent years. Elephant herds move from the forests of Hathai Kotor Hills and Longtarai Hills mainly during the dry season, searching for food. The forest department said a project is underway to create a safe corridor for elephants. This corridor aims to keep elephants away from villages and reduce attacks.
