Russia launches massive attacks in Ukraine; Zelenskyy presses for peace, sanctions, and US support
February 9, 2026
On Monday, February 9, the 1,446th day of the Russia-Ukraine war, fighting and diplomacy moved in a tense mix.
Russian forces launched "massive" air raids on the Ukrainian port city of Odesa, killing at least one person, officials said. They also attacked Ukraine's major oil and gas company Naftogaz in the Poltava region overnight. Naftogaz said it was the 19th Russian strike on its facilities, though damage details remain unclear.
Russian state media claimed that Russian forces captured Hlushkivka in eastern Kharkiv and Sydorivka in Sumy.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russian energy infrastructure is "a legitimate target" for Ukrainian strikes. He explained Russia’s energy sector funds weapons production. Zelenskyy added that in the past week, Russia launched over 2,000 attack drones, 1,200 guided bombs, and 116 missiles at Ukrainian cities and villages.
On the political front, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Ukrainian and Russian leaders must meet in person to solve the toughest peace issues. He claimed only US President Donald Trump has the power to end the war. Sybiha noted that most points of the 20-point peace plan are settled, but the hardest issues require leader-level talks.
Sybiha revealed the US told Ukraine it would ratify security guarantees in Congress following a ceasefire deal. The US would provide a security "backstop" without deploying troops on the ground. Other countries besides France and the UK confirmed willingness to send troops as a deterrence force if peace is reached.
In crime and security news, a Ukrainian-born Russian citizen was extradited from Dubai to Moscow. He is suspected of seriously wounding Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev, a top Russian military intelligence officer, who survived the attack. Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for assisting with the detention.
Zelenskyy announced sanctions on foreign makers of parts for Russian drones and missiles. He said Moscow circumvents sanctions to get these components.
Separately, Indian refiners like Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum are avoiding Russian oil purchases for April delivery and likely longer, Reuters reported. This aligns with New Delhi's efforts to secure a trade deal with Washington.
